Joaquin Phoenix is clearly not afraid of shaking things up a bit, and while he comes across as a laid back, low-key guy, he clearly has no problem saying exactly how he feels about Oscar Season.
When recently asked by Interview magazine about being Oscar campaigning for his flim, Phoenix pretty much summed it up in one word: “Bullshit.” Well, he summed it up in many words actually, Phoenix goes on to say:
“…I think it’s total, utter bulls–t, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot.”
And after talking about bad tasting vegetables, Phoenix also makes sure to add a few more jabs, just in case those…um…seniors at the Oscar voting tables didn’t hear him.
“Pitting people against each other . . . It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world. It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don’t know how to explain it — and it’s not like I’m in this place where I think I’m just above it — but I just don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things.”
Phoenix is one of the most eccentric and unorthodox actors in Hollywood, and turned heads a few years ago when he said he was going to call it quits as an actor, and become a…rapper. So, it is obvious to hear him make these type of statements, and you can’t help but to agree with the formerly bearded rapper. The Oscars are a glamorous three plus hour showcase that involves a lot of wealthy and fortunate people giving themselves a pat on the back, and Phoenix is one of the few actors out there that will actually speak out about it, and not leave in fear that they will be shunned from getting those events.
Phoenix himself has been nominated twice for Academy awards (Gladiator, Walk the Line) and while he did lose on both occasions, it will be interesting to see if he gets nominated this year with his much buzzed about “The Master,” and even more interesting to hear his speech if he even ends up winning it. I would like to believe it would go something like this:
“Well…I kind of-*censored* all over you guys, and you still give me this gold-is this even gold? I doubt it…you guys need to realize that you’re all *censored*…” Cut to commercial.
Joaquin liked my joke.
